College Dining

I like to eat, so I suppose someday I will write about what there is that I eat on campus. Maybe today would be a good day. I’m at the library now, but I forgot my headphones that I need to do my Chinese homework. My by-sitters won’t appreciate if my computer blares out Chinese phrases and tones for the next hour, so I’ll just do something else, rather than walk back to my room and get them.

I just got back from the Hot Spot, which is an all-you-care-to-eat dining hall in the Union Building. A question I get a lot from home folks is what I eat on campus, and doesn’t the food get old? I can’t answer everything in one sentence, but so far I haven’t gotten tired of local food. There are two all-you-can-eat places, and they both have different food and specialties. The Dube has an Italian place that cooks up made to order pasta, and I go there when I want some real pasta made just the way I like it. Yesterday I had a Penne spinach mushroom grilled chicken broccoli red sauce pesto concoction that was pretty good. And a grapefruit for dessert. Strange, but very good.

The Hot Spot has a stir-fry grill where you fill up a plate with raw veggies and meat and give it to the cooks who fry it with lo mein or rice. That’s also one of my favorite places. There’s an omelet bar where you order omelets, but I haven’t tried that yet and there’s a sandwich place that makes sandwiches; some of their Panini’s are as good as Panera’s. Every day there are different special plates with pasta, meat, and veggies to choose from. Both places have a nice salad bar and there are always hot dogs, pizza (all kinds, including cheeseless, alfredo, and pesto), and burgers and the soft serve ice cream machine that I frequent too often. Nothing compares with the elated feeling I get when I manage to make a perfectly shaped cone with no voids at the bottom. I love all the fresh fruit; there are always grapefruit, fresh pineapple, oranges, and bananas, in addition to occasional berries.

Besides the Dube and the Hot Spot there are many more food courts that have sub, coffee, smoothie, asian food, and sushi stands. These places have transfer specials, which mean I can use one of my meals on the meal plan to get an entrée and a drink, or I can just buy the stuff like I would at the mall.

I found the Hot Spot’s menu online with the food from Tuesday. The menus change a lot from day to day. As you can see, there’s a lot of variety to choose from. The bold letters behind the food stand for dietary distinctions; these are posted at food stations as well.
